Internship program

Internships at the Goulburn Valley Equine Hospital-

Thank you for demonstrating interest in our program. We have been providing  Internships at the GVEH since 1994. Past interns have been admitted to residency programmes in the United States and the UK, and have also gone on to work at other private specialist referral hospitals.  We are very proud of all of our previous graduates and wish to encourage people with good work attitudes and excellent motivation to apply.

What is the timeline for applying?

The GVEH offers up to six internship positions each year.

Twelve-month appointments: Three or four positions are available each year. Starting dates vary . There are no specific application dates as they have varying starting dates. Many interns start in late December after graduation in Australia. Others start during the year after completin of a previous job. These are our normal internships, usually filled by Australian graduates.

Six-month appointments:  Three or four positions are available each year and they are particularly popular with foreign graduates who are able to  be registered with the Veterinary Practitioners Registration Board of Victoria. The seasonal internships start in September and finish in January or February. Applications are due by early March and candidates are notified in early April each year.

Commonly we identify interns by working with them as students, during their electives in final year with Australian universities, or as veterinarians visiting GVEH. If you are seriously considering applying for the internship programme, we strongly recommend that you contact us to organize a visit for at least a week prior to lodging your application.  As we have many applications for externships and visits, it is good idea to book early.

General background

The hospital was built on an 85 acre irrigated farm in 1988 and was staffed initially by the two present Senior Veterinarians (Jim Vasey and Angus McKinnon) with a single combined receptionist / veterinary nurse. During the 2017-18 year the hospital had 6 senior veterinarians and 5 interns  supported by 21 full time staff.  Approx 860 surgeries are performed under general anaesthesia and over 1400 horses are radiographed each year. The practice services around 2500 broodmares (~ 65:35 Thoroughbred and Standardbred) for routine work. In addition frozen semen is held from over 250 stallions and > 150 embryo transfers were performed in the last season . The hospital has a research/recipient herd of ~200 mares.

4) To understand and contribute to the ever expanding wealth of veterinary information.
5) To encourage the development of all members of the practice.

6) To contribute to the veterinary eduction of veterinary students from both Australian veterinary schools and overseas schools / colleges. 

Specific goals of the Internship

1) Provide an environment conducive to excellence in a clinical setting.
2) Provide an opportunity to develop strong professional associations with veterinarians currently demonstrating a high level of commitment.
3) Provide an opportunity to learn through involvement with a large and diverse cases load.
4) Provide an opportunity to teach research principles, collect data and publish conclusions from a project chosen by us but interesting to you.
5) To help create specific career path opportunities for the highly motivated.

About the Internship

2) Accommodation:

The hospital provides two houses (furnished at a basic level) on-site at the practice for interns if they require it, to encourage easy access to the hospital.  There is a charge for this accommodation, which includes weekly cleaning. However, interns are welcome to chose to live off-site.

Married interns are requested to find accommodation off site, as the GVEH accommodation is not suitable for a married couple.

A bungalow located next to the cottage is used to provide basic  temporary residence for visiting Australian or foreign veterinarians and/or veterinary students, at a small cost.

4) Holidays.

Four weeks annual leave, calculated pro rata. Holidays for the 12 month internship are normally taken between the months of April and August. Holidays for the  6 month internship are taken after the end of the programme, in February.

5) Registration.

Interns must have a degree that enables them to register with the Veterinary Practitioners Registation Board of Victoria. Interns are responsible for their own registration.

Many countries outside Australia, New Zealand , USA, Ireland  and the UK unfortunately have no reciprocal rights for registration. 

6) Work permits

Interns from foreign countries must have appropriate documentation / visas that allows them to be paid legally for working in Australia for the period of  their internship. GVEH will sponsor overseas staff for their visa applications where necessary.

7) Intern Responsibilities


The hospital is a private practice and NOT a veterinary teaching hospital, however we provide an excellent setting for interaction in a clinical environment. Out-patient cases are usually examined by a senior veterinarian and an intern, providing a "one on one" exchange of ideas. "In patients" are discussed during daily rounds and individually at other times. We hold annual seminars for either veterinarians or the general public.


Interns are responsible for the well being, monitoring and daily treatments of all hospitalised and pastured cases.

Specific responsibilities.

The interns will rotate through different areas on a weekly schedule. The areas are:

a) Outpatients: The intern(s) will assist in the diagnosis and work up of outpatient cases, and may have the opportunity to  scrub into surgery with the specialist surgeons

b) Anaesthesia: The intern is responsible for  anaesthesia. The number of anaesthetics per day varies from 0 to 10 per day;  on busy days the outpatient intern will provide anaesthetic support.

c) Reproduction. The intern will work with the Theriogenology resident and Angus McKinnon, providing treatment to the recipient mares and gaining experience in rectal palpation and ultrasound of mares and in collection and processing of semen from stallions.

d) Night Duty. The intern will be responsible for monitoring and treating cases during the hours between 7 pm and 7am. This rotation only exists during the breeding season.

e) Medicine- The intern is responsible for monitoring and administering treatments to inpatients , under the supervision of the medicine clinician or specialist. In addition, the intern will assist in the evaluation of medical cases and will provide working support for the other interns where needed.


Interns are responsible for maintaining medical records on all cases presenting to the hospital.  These include all treatments administered to both "in" and "out" patients.

6) The ability to perform and publish clinical research. Opportunities exist to perform small clinical trials using our research mares and prospective or retrospective studies on the large hospital case load.
